Why would a Samaritan village not receive Jesus?
“Why would a Samaritan village not receive Jesus? Surely, they would have wanted to listen to Him and see the miracles and healings that were common place with Him? We know that Jews would not mix with Samaritans as they were thought to be "unclean" as their worship was influenced by neighbouring and invading nations and their Gods. So perhaps they wanted to spare Jesus the embarrassment? But they also had a different understanding of where God chose for His dwelling: Mount Zion in Jerusalem or Mount Gerizim near Shechem. This makes sense as Jesus goes on to say that He has "nowhere to lay His head." God chooses to dwell in the pure soul. It is not a place or mountain and Jesus says that the time has come when we worship God in "spirit and in truth." God chooses to live in us and make His home in us - to "dwell with us". As Jesus hides in the Tabernacle and in Holy Communion, so too He Hides in us. Let us not turn Him away but let Him grow in us.
With my prayer for you all.
God bless you. Fr Graham”
