Lent begins on 26 February. Traditionally the three weeks before Lent starts, we begin to think about how we can use Lent wisely, rather than Ash Wednesday catching us out. A little thought beforehand can make a big difference to our spiritual growth. Prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Prayer might include coming to Mass more often (weekdays as well as Sunday), praying the rosary every day, Lectio Divina or picking up one of the resources we have provided for this year. Of course, the 33-day consecration retreat is also a good idea. Fasting does not just mean food: fasting from sin, TV, internet, social media…. It is an offering and a discipline, so we are not possessed by our possessions. Almsgiving. The Lenten Alms donations will go to charity (see porch for box), but we can give of ourselves, our time and gifts to others as well as organisations. A visit to a forgotten relative or neighbour might prove very charitable. Why? To grow in our life in Christ. To know our need of His mercy and to share it. That is why the sacrament of Reconciliation (confession) is a must! Interesting resource from the Diocese - View Here

2020 is the 10th anniversary of Verbum Domini – Pope Benedict XVI’s Apostolic Exhortation on ‘The Word of the Lord’ and the 1,600 anniversary of St Jerome’s death. These dates have inspired the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales to dedicate 2020 as a year of focus on the Bible and ‘The God Who Speaks’.
