WELCOME TO OUR PARISH
From Father Graham
Mary was "distressed" when she saw and heard the angel's message: "Rejoice!.... The Lord is with you". God had prepared her for this moment, even from the moment of her immaculate conception. So why was she distressed? It must have been terrifying - a being from the angelic world, normally unseen although always present, before her eyes. How far the angel must have come, from heaven to earth to bring the message of God. How far God humbles Himself to come to us: the creator becomes created and takes our flesh in the tabernacle of Mary's womb. There He is hidden, and even before birth makes a journey to visit John the Baptist in the womb of his mother. God makes the journey to us to meet us in Jesus. He shows His face to the world and we are saved.
In life so many people are distressed and fear the very thought of God. Maybe they have never met or heard of who Jesus really is - God. Maybe a childhood experience has not been engaged with since leaving school. Maybe a painful experience leaves a hurt that makes the thought of Jesus and the Church hard to comprehend. God has made the journey to meet us in the reality of the humanity and divinity of Jesus. As Mary allowed herself to be an instrument of God, perhaps we can also be a way for people to meet Him. Invite someone to Mass with you this Christmas. Whatever your or their emotions or distress, the Lord only needs our consent to enter in and then our fear will lead to joy and we shall hear the joy of the angelic hosts as they sing "Glory to God in the highest heaven!"
May God bless you all and my prayer for a blessed Christmas.
Fr Graham
