WELCOME TO OUR PARISH
From Father Graham
I hope you have had a chance to look at our crib or a crib you have at home. It is a chance to ponder the reality and the poverty of Jesus in the manger. To wonder at the extent of God's love for us that He becomes human for us, to be born and die that we might be born to eternal life and never die again. St Francis wanted to spread this message and so his "live" crib (in front of the Christmas Mass as it was being celebrated), hosted real animals and people portraying the shepherds, the Magi and, of course Mary and Joseph. The Christ child was probably a carved figure, but it is recorded that at least one of the observers saw "the infant come alive".
It is easy to imagine what we think the Holy Family might have been like, what Jesus' (hidden) childhood was like or how Mary and Joseph brought Him up . We try to compare this with our own experience of family and we feel somewhat inadequate, far from holy. Yet, Francis' intention was to show how real and earthy our faith is. God becomes flesh so that we might become one with Him. What an exchange! Likewise, the Holy Family, to whom we are called to live, was as real as your family but with Jesus at the centre. Let us invite Jesus into our family, that He will be at the centre, that we might cooperate with His grace, teaching and hidden presence. So we will be transformed and our society will be transformed too as we see the "infant come alive".
May God bless you all and my prayer for a continued joyful Christmas and blessed new year.
Fr Graham
