Fr. Graham Writes: 17th December 2023
All the clergy of our diocese have met with Bishop Richard this week as he unveiled for us the updated Diocesan Pastoral Plan (DPP). At the heart of it is Jesus and the call to mission by being "communities where the Lord is known and loved". That is who we are.
We are a parish where Jesus is at the centre, not on the periphery or as an excuse to meet, but He is the reason we gather to worship, pray and serve. He is who we are. The Levites asked John the Baptist who he was. John denied being the Christ and after a few failed guesses they insisted: "Who are you? We must take back an answer to those who sent us. What have you to say about yourself?"
John didn't promote himself or seek his own agenda. He wanted to become less so that Jesus could be seen more. If we are to be authentic disciples then this could be our model: letting go of our own wants and seeking Jesus' wants. It will set us free to really love and be loved with Jesus, our Saviour, at the heart of everything we do. As we enter the final stages of this short Advent we can focus more intently to make Jesus the centre of our parish, our life and our hope. Without Him we are nothing. With Him we "rejoice". He is who we are. The future of the world depends on it.
May God bless you all. Cling to Jesus.
Fr Graham
