Fr. Graham Writes: 19th March 2023
Why did Jesus heal the man born blind and give him his sight?
Was it one of many miracles done out of compassion?
Was it to teach those who witnessed it and us something?
Was it to challenge the Pharisees?
Yes. All three. But this healing is a little different in that the blind man meets Jesus again after he has been healed and can now see. Jesus sends him to the water to wash the paste from his eyes, a paste mixed with spit and the dust of the earth. Jesus is re-creating this man and giving him his sight through water that will wash away his blindness and sin. This points to the waters of baptism where our sins are washed away and we, like this man, are given the sight of faith. Now, the nolonger-blind-man, witnesses to this miracle and refuses to be manipulated by the Pharisees.
Jesus looks for him again. Until now, the man has never seen Jesus, he has only heard His voice. Now he can see Him., the One who gives sight and faith. Jesus deals with us in the same way to increase our faith. We cannot see Him and He looks for us, so that "looking at Him" we may worship Him.
May Mary, our mother, pray for you and us all for a blessed Sunday.
God bless you.
Fr Graham
