Does God care?
Martha and some onlookers asked the same question after Lazarus had died. Why did Jesus wait for two days before even setting out to Bethany? Why didn't Jesus prevent Lazarus' death if He is the Son of God?
Sometimes it seems as if God is slow or chooses not to intervene.
Do we really believe this? Or do we believe, with Martha, that Jesus is "the Christ, the Son of God, the One who was to come into this world"?
Martha's frank conversation with Jesus begins with "if you had been here" and ends with "I believe". The sickness was not of God's doing. This came into the world through sin, the common human trait to choose any way but God's and to try to be like God without Him. But the remedy is God's. ("I mean to raise you from your graves my people"). The sickness of sin no longer has to end in death but, through the resurrection of Jesus, in God's glory.
The resurrection of Lazarus from the dead was brought forward to the now to show how God was going to work through the death and resurrection of Jesus, God's son. A sign of things to come. Does God care about me? With great confidence you can be sure He does.
With my prayer for you and your intentions.
God bless you.
Fr Graham
