Sunday of the Word of God
"During this year of the “God who Speaks”, Pope Francis has designated today as the Sunday of the Word of God. After his temptation in the wilderness, Jesus leaves home and goes to the busy trading towns where He can preach His message of the closeness of the Kingdom of God to as many people as possible. He was “driven” into the wilderness and driven to preaching the Gospel. The Word of God made flesh does not live in closed Bibles but in the beating hearts of souls. He desires to make His home in us. Simon Peter and Andrew, James and John heard the Word of God speaking and calling to them. Something in what they heard compelled them to respond and leave their security. The Word of God spoke to them and He still speaks to us. We too respond. Try this at home or join us for lectio on Thursday evenings or listen to the readings at Mass. God has something to say to you. I can still remember words or phrases from the Bible that spoke to me even years ago. They were direct words from God to me, in a particular situation or important decision. I remember them and call them to mind and I recall God’s faithfulness in the past and His presence with me now. He looks, He speaks and He still says “Follow me!” God bless you all.
