News from Stella Maris (Apostleship of the Sea) on Ukraine
Ukraine is the world’s sixth-largest seafaring nation, accounting for 4% of the global seafarer workforce. Since the war began, Ukrainian seafarers haven't been able to leave Ukraine to join ships elsewhere because of martial law imposed on men between 18 and 60 years of age. Following on from earlier COVID restrictions, some seafarers haven’t been able to work for a year, which means they can’t earn money and support their families. With your support, Stella Maris stepped in to support the immediate needs of these seafarers and their families. We have provided tens of thousands of pounds in vital aid to hundreds of families to help them through this difficult period. We have provided support such as mobile phone SIM cards, food, transport, and temporary accommodation. In addition, we have developed a programme of psychological support for Ukrainian seafarers and their families who have been affected by the war. This programme gives them access to professional psychologists who will provide essential mental health support.
