From Deacon Simon: 12th March 2023
In our gospel we hear of a rather rapid faith journey. Jesus opens a conversation with a woman, He asks her for a drink of water, and He gets a rather hostile reaction ‘What you want water from me.’ As the conversation continues the attitude of the Woman at the Well changes, she shows him respect by addressing Jesus as Sir, then she acknowledges Him as a prophet and finally Jesus reveals himself to her as the Messiah and the Christ. Immediately she rushes to tell the town’s folk that the Christ has come to visit them. Initially many Samaritans of that town believed in him on the strength of the woman’s testimony, but when they spoke with Jesus many more came to believe.
My guess is that for just about everyone here that same patten has played out in our lives. Initially someone speaks to us about Jesus and our faith journey begins but when we read or hear the actual words of Jesus our faith is increased and confirmed. And that is why we are all called to be missionary disciples like the Woman at the Well. The challenge facing us all is, therefore, who will we speak to about Jesus, who will we start on their journey of faith?
