Fr. Graham Writes: 9th March 2025
We have begun this season of Lent and we have been encouraged on Ash Wednesday to take up the weapons of prayer, fasting and almsgiving as we engage in spiritual warfare. It makes me feel uncomfortable using such language, but if we are honest, it is a battle that we are aware of everyday. Decisions, moral choices, temptations are all around us that challenge our faith and can lead to our soul's decay or to danger.
We cannot claim ignorance. Jesus asks us to pick up cross daily and follow Him and He tells us that in the world we will have trouble, but the victory is His. Today we even hear in the Gospel that Jesus was tempted Himself, by the devil. He allows this to show us and give us strength. To indicate how we are to respond to temptation and trust in God. But also, to show the enemy's wile and methods.
Jesus had been fasting for forty days and was hungry. He was at His weakest. It is when and through our weaknesses that our temptations will come. Expect them and stand firm in faith with the rebuttals that Jesus gives: to rely on God for everything and to trust Him and worship Him alone.
Jesus comes to the place of temptation from His baptism and full of the Spirit. We too find ourselves in the desert of this life in Lent and we have the same Holy Spirit, through our baptism, to lead us. Let your guardian angel help you too.
With my prayer for you for a blessed and fruitful Lent.
Fr Graham
