Fr. Graham Writes: 8th January 2023
Many of the prayers that were said for Pope Benedict XVI at his Requiem Mass in St Peter's, Rome will be said for us at our funeral Mass. There were some additional texts due to his Priesthood and Papacy, but many were the same together with the symbolism of the Gospels on the coffin, sprinkling with Holy Water and the symbols of Christian ministry.
God doesn't have favourites and, whatever our calling, each one of us is first baptised. Baptism and the cross are the fundamental symbols in any funeral Mass. As John the Baptist said of Jesus, "It is I who need baptism from you", we too need baptism from Jesus and into Jesus.
Pope Benedict commented that we all need to rediscover and value our baptism so that we might fall in love with Jesus and follow Him with joy. In our baptism we receive the full effects of the death and resurrection of Jesus. He gives it to us personally, by name. We are not worthy either, but we too can be persuaded to trust that God can do this.
Let us fall in love with Jesus again as we discover the meaning and depth of our baptism. With my prayer for you daily.
God bless you
Fr Graham
