Fr. Graham Writes: 7th January 2024
The Magi were looking for truth and meaning in life and they found the Truth and the giver of life.
They were truly wise because they sought something outside of themselves. They were orientated towards God and not to self. This is why, unlike Herod, they were not "perturbed" by the sight of the star and the prospect of the "infant King". They were humble enough to do him "homage" on their knees when they found Him. For Herod, Jesus was a threat to his existence and reign.
God may use all sorts of "stars" and wonders to attract us to the light of Christ's face. After a long journey (sometimes a lifetime), we may still be centred on following the brightness of sensual and attractive things, but we still need to enter into the house and see the simplicity of Jesus and Mary. There we find the Light, Truth and object of our worship. All the treasures in the world amount to nothing compared to Jesus.
In our baptism we then choose to give everything we have and are to Him as He has given His whole self to us. Our faith is about the unfolding of this revelation from God of Jesus. At the Epiphany, the baptism of Jesus and the wedding feast at Cana, God reveals who Jesus is and continues to reveal Him to us now. The more we know God, the more we know ourselves, for everything is really seen in the light of Christ. He alone is worthy of our homage.
May God bless you all and my prayer a holy Epiphany.
Fr Graham
