Fr. Graham Writes: 5th November 2023
As a parish we have a great deal to offer. We have well kept church buildings, refurbished parish rooms, groups to join, events to get involved in. But these are not our primary aim. We are not inviting people to be part of a club or join another group to socialise in.
Everything we do, and are about, should reveal and bring about our true purpose: to know and love God in Jesus and follow Him.
This is the litmus test for our decisions. In so doing, everything must find it's way to what happens at the altar at Mass.
I can imagine this is why St Paul commends the Thessalonians. They received God's message for what is really is, "God's message and not some human thinking." It is easy to lose sight of this when we allow ourselves to be distracted by less important things, not to mention the hurts and trials of every day life.
This month of November also reminds us of what our aim is too: heaven. So we let go of everything that hinders. Jesus criticises people who raise the external and the ego to an elevated place. Our motive needs to be purified as well as our hearts in order to see God. The burden that Jesus places on our shoulders is light and knowing Him sets us free. We have nothing else to give. We offer Him.
May God bless you all.
