Fr. Graham Writes: 30th April 2023
"What made you want to be a priest?" I am often asked this question, especially when people discover that I was an engineer and subsequently a convert. It is difficult to answer briefly. Being a priest is not a job or career choice. Most priests will tell of a calling, a voice that draws them to listen to what God wants for them. It might be a desire to do God's will and to give themselves to Christ. To do anything else would mean being "cut to the heart" in fear of offending God. Jesus says, His "sheep follow (Him) because they know His voice". This voice doesn't stop after ordination, the priest must continually listen to the voice of the Good Shepherd in prayer. Jesus leads them to green pastures and they, in turn, lead the flock entrusted to them. But each one of us must pray and listen to the voice of Jesus as we all have a vocation. We have been anointed with the Holy Spirit in baptism and called to follow Him, wherever He may lead us. Kings and Priests are anointed with the oil of Chrism for particular vocations, but each priest and (even) King always comes from a family and a parish. The vocation to marriage and parenthood is a seed bed of many vocations. We must pray for children to hear His voice calling them. Our vocation is not about what we do but who we are. We are called to listen and follow the shepherd and "guardian of our souls".
With my prayer for you during the season of Easter and we begin our prayer for vocations.
God bless you.
Fr Graham
