Fr. Graham Writes 2nd October 2022
The Christian life is exciting and full of hope. The Christian virtue of hope is not the same as optimism. As the speaker at this week's clergy formation said in his opening remarks:
"I am not optimistic, but I am full of hope!"
The gospel today reminds us that we should be full of hope as we ask Jesus to increase our faith. If we ask, He will give us more faith. Do we ask? To have more faith is not the same as more certainty. Faith increases in time of testing and trial. I don't need to trust when I am sure of myself! So be careful what you ask for.
To have more faith will bring Christian joy. This is not the same as happiness.
All of these graces and virtues are a gift from God and cannot be generated from within ourselves by effort or a change of attitude. The only attitude is the Beatitude. This is exemplified by the joy of the servant who serves Jesus. We are to be like Mary who was joyful in her Lord's service and was His mother, but handmaid and disciple first.
With my prayer for you all always,
God bless you,
Fr Graham.
