Fr. Graham Writes: 2nd July 2023
This weekend, as a diocese, we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the consecration of Arundel Cathedral. The cathedral is the place that enshrines the "bishop's throne" (cathedra) and is a focal point of unity for our diocese. As Bishop Richard reminded our Confirmation candidates at their Confirmation Mass in May, the cathedral was commissioned to be built by Henry Fitzalan-Howard in 1868. It was quite a brave venture for a young man in his early 20s.
Last weekend I was invited to the Simple Profession of Br Matthew at Quarr Abbey, a Benedictine Monastery in the Isle of Wight. As he offers himself to God and the monastery as a monk, it is an equally brave venture for him as he too is in his mid 20s.
Both show amazing courage and faith with the need for perseverance.
Jesus asks us to "prefer nothing to Christ" (Rule of St Benedict) not even family, that we might be worthy of Him and be able to receive more of His love and mercy. Jesus asks us to take risks for Him. To let go of our wants, thoughts, opinions and surrender to Him. Live for Him. The more we give the more we receive, and the reward is great. Even the smallest risk for Jesus will reap an immeasurable reward.
With my prayer for you each day.
God bless you.
Fr Graham
