Fr. Graham Writes: 2nd February 2025
Today's Mass starts with the blessing of candles and a procession with a solemn entrance with light.
This might catch us unawares. We are used to the normal beginning of Mass and we might feel unsure of what to do. We are commemorating the Lord's Presentation in the Temple and the Purification of Mary. "Suddenly the Lord will come into His Temple". He was coming to reclaim it as He was being offered to God. He was about to purify the Priesthood and the sacrificial offerings with His own body.
Simeon and Anna must have felt equally shocked and unsure of what to do when Jesus was brought into His Temple. Even though they were waiting for Jesus and believed He would come, it still must have come as a shock. Simeon was getting old now and Anna had been in the Temple for years. But, God keeps His promises.
They were going about their daily routine and God intervened.
God intervenes and enters into our lives everyday. When we notice, it takes us by surprise and we don't know what to do or how to respond. He comes with the same intention as on that first Presentation. He comes to purify us and offer Himself for us. To join our offering to His body. He sheds light on our darkness and relights our dimmed candles of faith that were first lit at our baptism. In faith He takes us with Him to Cavalry and the Resurrection.
We might not know what to do today but tomorrow we know we are to walk with Jesus with the light of faith ever bright as we prepare to enter His Heavenly Temple.
With my prayer for you every day.
God bless you,
Fr Graham
