Fr. Graham Writes: 2nd April 2023
When I was young I wasn't aware of Holy Week. It was usually the beginning of the school holiday and Good Friday meant Hot Cross Buns. Palm Sunday was a story in the Bible and on Thursday the Monarch gave Maundy Coins to people. Holy Saturday was just the day before Easter Sunday and Easter Eggs.
When I attended my first whole Holy Week I was overwhelmed with the drama, the meaning, the sadness and the grace. The experience of the joy of the resurrection of Jesus was like I had been viewing everything before in monochrome. Now I could see, hear and taste everything differently because everything had changed. Jesus was not only risen but He had come alive for me. He was real and present.
Holy Week is like a retreat. We enter Jerusalem with the crowds with Jesus and we stay there with Him in the Upper Room, the garden, the hill of Calvary, the tomb. It is not for the faint hearted but God wants you there and He has something ready to teach you and help you grow in friendship with Jesus, to be a more faithful disciple.
Thís week, these three days changed the world forever. Let us not limit it to eggs, coins and buns but do just the one thing He asks of us, "Follow me!"
With my prayer for you each day.
God bless you.
Fr Graham.
