Fr. Graham Writes: 28th July 2024
Thousands of people from all over the world will be travelling or tuning in to watch the Olympics in France. They will be seeking to support their favourite athletes. The medal winners will be celebrities and triumphant.
The crowds followed Jesus because they were "impressed by the signs He gave by curing the sick". They were keen to place all their hope on Jesus as a King to overthrow their political enemies and occupiers. Their enthusiasm diminished quickly as they became hungry.
How easy it is to be misunderstood and to be cancelled.
Although Jesus miraculously satisfies their hunger with five loaves and two fish, they fail to see it's significance. God not only satisfies our every need, but Jesus is the fulfillment of the scriptures and greater than Moses, Elijah, Elisha and all the prophets. Jesus not only feeds us in body and soul but He becomes our food: the Eucharistic bread in Holy Communion.
The crowds followed Jesus because He seemed to be the solution to their problems. He was put on a podium to receive their adulation. But He was unceremoniously stripped of His prize as His teaching and message unsettled them and challenged the status quo. His podium became a cross and His medal a crown of thorns.
Whatever our reason for belief, for coming to Mass, for following Jesus; let us not limit Him to our own needs or perspective but allow Him to change us to fit with His will as "He is over all, through all and within all".
With my prayer for you every day.
God bless you.
Fr Graham
