Fr. Graham Writes: 23rd April 2023
Why is it that some people have faith and believe in Jesus Christ and others appear not to? St Peter addresses the crowds gathered on the day of Pentecost and helps them see what was prophesied in the scriptures about Jesus. They couldn't see it, even though it was staring them in the face. The Holy Spirit illuminated St Peter's mind to see the truth and it was the same Spirit that worked in the minds and hearts of those thousands gathered to hear the first Easter homily. Thousands were converted. The veil had been lifted from their eyes. Likewise, "something prevented" the two disciples on the road to Emmaus from "recognising" Jesus as He walked with them. A veil covered their minds. This time Jesus explains all that has happened. Previously they couldn't see it and they walk away in disappointment. Jesus didn't fulfil their expectations. But actually, in their disbelief, they were not fulfilling His. At the breaking of bread their "eyes were opened". The veil of ignorance, lack of knowledge and faith, is lifted. For this to happen to us we need to be open to the intervention of God's action in the world and our life, calling us always. Then we need the humility to accept this message and Christ into the centre of our life to reign, govern and guide. The veil will be lifted and we shall see.
With my prayer for you during the whole season of Easter.
God bless you.
Fr Graham
