Fr. Graham Writes: 13th October 2024
I don't think I have ever been asked the question asked of Jesus in today's gospel: how to inherit eternal life? Perhaps we ask it in a different way: "What happens when we die?" Due to our sophistication we pursue the answer in a varied number of places (scientific, psychological, ethereal, astrological, new age, world religions....), but none of these give a conclusive answer. Jesus does.
Jesus is able to answer because He knows. He is God made flesh. He hasn't come to hide God but to show us the Father. To know Him is to have eternal life.
Everything that we cling to for security actually makes us less free and more difficult to enter eternal life. So much so that Jesus says, for us, it is impossible - but not for God. As God, He has come to make eternal life possible for us, but not apart from Him. The journey that Jesus makes is to Calvary and the cross. It is there that He abandons Himself into our hands. Relying on human power and authority destroys Jesus. But nothing is impossible for God. The resurrection of Jesus is the remedy and the power of God
If we want eternal life, ask Jesus the question. He will give the same answer. The answer will be to let go of everything that clings and surrender to God. Jesus calls it following Him and being a disciple, even through difficult times and persecutions to eternal life. Having Jesus is worth more than anything we could possess.
With my prayer for all of you everyday.
God bless you.
Fr Graham
