Unwrapping our Faith
Fr Graham writes… Why do we pray for the dead?
Death is not the end. Because of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ there is nothing that can separate us from the love of God. Our refusal to receive that love and forgiveness is the only barrier through the gift of free will. To have lived a life trying to follow Jesus, confessing our sins and living in God's grace means we receive the gift of eternal life with Christ and His saints. Yet we all have the consequences of sin marking our souls and bodies, as Jesus bore the marks of the crucifixion in His risen body. At death we receive the particular judgement of God when we see God face to face. To be in complete union with God is the gift of heaven. A life of rejecting God continues for eternity as we condemn ourselves to an existence without God. For those whose life is in grace but not in complete union with God there is purgatory where the cleansing of the soul is completed as we yearn and prepare to be in the presence of God for ever. Our purification is necessary to have a pure heart and see God's face. A soul in this state cannot pray for oneself and so we pray for them, offering sacrifices, penance, prayers and the sacrifice of Jesus in the Mass for their eternal souls.
