Fr. Graham Writes: 11th December 2022
One of my favourite hymns is Lo! He Comes with Clouds Descending. It is a great Advent hymn and enlightens the mind to compare the difference between the 1st and 2nd coming of Christ. It beautifully suggests that thousands of saints "swell the triumph of His train". I like the idea of being in the wake and hidden in the clothes of Jesus, caught up in His love. It goes on to say, "Every eye shall behold Him". The sight of Jesus then may cause us to wail or gasp.
But it was not so at His first coming.
People were unsure. Even the great John the Baptist sent people to check and ask Jesus if He really was the Messiah. Jesus refers to the first reading at this Mass (Isaiah) that are the signs of the Christ: the blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear..... John would have heard this as a "YES". Jesus asks two things of us as He did then: tell others what you "hear and see" & do not "lose faith in me." Sometimes it is hard to hear and see Jesus. But He is still working among us. We can ask to hear and see Him so that our witness is more credible. Do not lose faith in Him. He is faithful. Just as His first coming was hidden and continues to be veiled, we know that His second coming will be powerful and visible to all as "every eye shall behold Him".
With my prayer for you all in this season of Advent.
God bless you. Fr Graham
