Fr. Graham Writes: 10th November 2024
"Give it everything you've got!" Such are the words of encouragement from a coach to their team as they go into a sporting arena. Or the politician who throws millions of dollars into canvassing possible voters with exuberant rallies. Yet life is not a game or a contest relying on strength, skill or money. Champions lose and political powers have terms of office.
As Catholic Christians we do not follow a team or ideology, we follow Jesus. He asks us to give Him everything. Everything we have and everything we are. The best and easiest way to do this is not by a strategy or game plan, but by simply surrendering to God. Give your life to God in humility, not paraded with loud acclamation or adrenalin, but with a quiet "Amen". This is the way of the scriptures today: the widow who gives her last food to Elijah, Jesus offering His life in exchange for ours and the widow who seems to give little to the Temple Tax but gives everything. In contrast to the scribes who pretend to give everything but give nothing.
This offering has been repeated throughout history: the young soldiers lying motionless on a battlefield, the hidden sacrifices of parents for their children, the silent prayers and tears of one keeping vigil by the bed of their dying loved one. They have given everything they've got in imitation of the One, even if they don't know it, who gave everything for us: Jesus. The key to life is to let go of everything and cling to Christ and to do so quietly and hidden. For our Heavenly Father sees all that is done in secret and He will reward you. With my prayer for you and your families.
God bless you.
