Fr. Graham Writes: 10th December 2023
John the Baptist was foretold in the Old Testament: "I am going to send my messenger before you". People thought He was the Messiah, but he insisted that the One that was to come after him, Jesus, was the Son of God and He is "more powerful than I am". John knew his place.
John prepared the way for the Way to come into the world. He baptised with water for the forgiveness of sins so that people would be able to hear the Word made flesh and listen to His words. His words were, and still are, words of consolation, Jesus speaks with the authority of the Father and with power. Our sins make it harder to hear and so it was necessary for John to come first.
Like John, we are called to be messengers to enable Jesus to enter the heart, soul and mind of those who do not believe or know Him. These people may be close to us, the stranger we meet in the street or a familiar face on our commute. How? As St Peter says we should be "living holy and saintly lives" as we wait for Jesus to return. John was only one man. We may be the only one who prepares someone to meet Jesus and He is more powerful than us.
May God bless you all and grant you a blessed Advent week.
Fr Graham
