Deacon Simon Writes: 22nd October 2023
Jesus tells us to we give to God what belongs to God. Clearly, we should give something that we value and that God values. This is a problem because what we value is not necessarily what God values and, in addition, the value of something can change depending upon circumstances.
But in our first reading today, we hear how God chose Cyrus to be his agent in the world, to carry out the tasks God gave to him. In our second reading we heard how Paul kept the Church in Thessalonica always in his prayers and how he constantly remembered how they have shown their faith in action.
There is something that we all have that is incredibly valuable, that we can give back to God, something that we value and something that God values and something that has kept its value throughout history, and that is our time.
Our time is valuable because it is finite; our time becomes precious when we spend it with those we love; but it can become priceless when we share it with the sick, the housebound, the isolated, the poor, when we help to feed the hungry and house and clothe the refugee, showing God’s love to all we meet, especially to those in need.
Yes, we give God our time during the Mass, but we should not stop giving our time to God the moment we exit the church doors.
Give back to God what God has given us,
let’s give him our time.
