Deacon Simon Writes: 21st July 2024
Just like our political parties Jesus has a manifesto containing a whole bunch of policies.
Just like our political parties Jesus sent people out to knock on doors canvassing, explaining those policies.
But unlike the canvassers who asked ‘can we count on your support’, the apostles asked ‘how can we support you’.
Our political parties are divided sitting on opposite benches in parliament, but St. Paul points out that ‘In Christ Jesus, you that used to be so far apart from us have been brought very close, by the blood of Christ. For he is the peace between us and has made the two into one and broken down the barrier which used to keep them apart, actually destroying in his own person the hostility caused by the rules and decrees of the Law.’
But for me the most striking difference between Jesus and politicians is their attitude towards the people. Our politicians make laws which they hope will improve our lives, but Jesus when he saw a large crowd; took pity on them, and he set himself to teach them at some length.
Yes, Jesus gave us a rule to live by, but he also explained, by using parables, why following the rule helps us and when we flout the rule He gave us a way back, repentance not punishment.
Our saviour is not a politician who makes laws, He is a divine human who serves. Passing laws or teaching, which do you think is most effective?
Blessings,
Deacon Simon
