Deacon Simon Writes: 14th May 2023
Every Sunday in Mass we say, “I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.” Clearly there is only one Church – St Paul makes that very clear in his letters to the various congregations that he founded. Clearly the Church is Holy because it has been set apart to do God's work, and because God is present in it, conferring holiness on it. Clearly the Church is catholic, which means universal, in other words all people are called to belong to our Church. But why is the Church described as apostolic? Yes, we are all disciples, but we are not all apostles.
But we have been baptised, and the celebrant, Priest, or Deacon, has been ordained by a Bishop, by the laying on of hands. In addition, anyone who has been confirmed by a Bishop or a Priest has received the Holy Spirit by the laying on of hands. But it goes deeper, a Bishop at his ordination receives the Holy Spirit by the laying on of hands, from another Bishop who also received the Holy Spirit by the laying on of hands, and so it continues back through history, Bishop by Bishop all the way back to St. Peter. There is an unbroken physical link between us and St. Peter and so by the laying on of hands we are equipped with the Holy Spirit to go out into the world to spread the good news. Alleluia! With my prayer for you every day.
God bless you,
Deacon Simon
