Fr. Graham Writes: 8th October 2023
For the third week in a row Jesus tells a parable about a vineyard. The first week recalls the generosity of God (equal pay). The second week examines our response (to do what we say). This week is different. Jesus doesn't speak about working in the vineyard but inheriting it. The parable doesn't need to be explained. We know the "landowner" is God. That the "tenants" are those people of God who mistreated the prophets. That the son, who is killed, is Jesus. The people of the Promise may not inherit the kingdom of God. It will be given to others. We find ourselves in a similar situation.
Being Catholic does not give us privilege but responsibility.
More is asked of us, not less. We may have a wonderful inheritance from Christ, received through the faith being handed on to us through generations and the saints, but we may have not received this legacy and treasure. We may be willing to throw it away or take it by force and change it to our way of thinking. We are "tenants", working in God's vineyard, who hope for an inheritance which we cannot earn and what "prayer does not dare to ask": God is our inheritance. Jesus tells us it is never too late to believe and begin. As in the words of Saint John Henry Newman: "Fear not that thy life shall come to an end, but rather fear that it shall never have a beginning."
With my prayer for you all.
God bless you.
Fr Graham
