Fr. Graham Writes 4th December 2022
Holiness is not subtle.
St John the Baptist, like many saints, was uncompromising. People were both fascinated by him and fearful of him. He was a challenge to the status quo that existed between occupied and occupying nations. John came to prepare the way for Jesus and he preached a baptism of repentance, "for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand."
Some came to see the celebrity, some to hear a preacher and some came just in case it was true. When some Sadducees and Pharisees arrived, John was surprised. "You brood of vipers!", he exclaims. I don't think people would have wanted John as their parish priest! But he spoke the truth. If those who would become obstacles for Jesus were to repent, then they were to prove it with the fruit of their lives. They were not to just "go through the motions", be baptised and go on their way, carrying on in the same way as before.
The prophet Isaiah records what this new life and the kingdom of heaven is like, "The wolf lives with the lamb.... the lion eats straw like the ox...". It has all changed, no enemies, no fear, no death. We try to live new lives because of Jesus who leads us and we prepare for the new life of heaven as we wait for the one who has baptised us with the "Holy Spirit and fire."
With my prayer for you all in this season of Advent.
God bless you.
Fr Graham
