Fr. Graham Writes: 4th August 2024
Over the next four Sundays of August, we hear the words of Jesus speaking of the "Bread of Life". What does Jesus mean when He says that He is the Bread of Life?
To understand this we need to reflect on last Sunday's Gospel of the feeding of the five thousand and the miracle of the manna in the desert (Exodus).
Jesus feeds the multitude and there are twelve baskets of scraps left over. The significance of this number cannot escape us. The twelve tribes and the twelve apostles. The miracle overflows to the ministry of the apostles and the whole Church down to this day in the Mass. The manna in the desert was equally miraculous - the people of God being fed daily while they were far from their new home. We are fed every day with Holy Communion while we are journeying to heaven.
But this food is not bread, fish or manna but Jesus Himself, the bread of Life. This miracle happens every time Mass is celebrated.
Jesus says, "Do not work for food that cannot last" and "stop complaining to each other".
If we really believe that Jesus is the food of eternal life given to us in Holy Communion we would strive to deepen our love of Him in the Mass and do everything we can to get to the next Mass. We would strive to be at peace with God and with one another because the bread He gives is His "flesh for the life of the world".
"Give us this bread always", Lord. Give us this miracle always, Lord - He has!
With my prayer for you every day.
God bless you.
Fr Graham
