Fr. Graham Writes: 29th October 2023
Two rival groups get together to disconcert Jesus, to trick Him. But Jesus answers their testing question and it disconcerted them instead. The "double love commandment" as the summary of the law and the prophets was not just for His enemies, but for us. Jesus challenges us too. The order is clear: love God first, then neighbour as self. In fact, we cannot truly love our neighbour unless we love God first, for God is love. The foundation of God's love is our beginning and our end. We are created out of love and will enter the fulness of God's loving presence when we die.
Forty years ago Bishop Cormac blessed the site and the foundation stone of St Peter's Church in Shoreham. The then prayer of blessing included a reminder that we are hewn from the cornerstone who is Christ. The foundation of the Church's life comes from the side of Christ, our Rock, on the cross. Any church building is a "place of sacrament and source of grace" where the Church "will rise".
As we look to love God and serve His people in our parish, let us seek to do nothing without Him and please Him in all things. His words may challenge us or even disconcert us but, like Jesus, may we never be tricked but only seek to love Him first and to be a place of worship, truth and refuge.
May God bless you all.
With my prayer for you each day.
Fr Graham
