Fr. Graham Writes: 26th January 2025
Much of Jesus' life was hidden. Despite, the glory of the angels, the shepherds and the Magi, Jesus is kept in safety - firstly in Egypt and then in Nazareth. A child growing in a family and learning a trade as well as being part of a community. After His baptism by John, He went into the desert and was confronted head on by Satan. It is only then that Jesus returns to Nazareth and, in the synagogue, the scripture He is handed to read is about Himself. Everything is slotting into place - the timing, the moment, the place, the person. He begins His three-year ministry and the unfolding of the Father's will and it's fulfilment on the cross and in the empty tomb.
Jesus - hidden in the womb, hidden in the manger, hidden in the family, hidden in persecution, hidden in the workplace, hidden in the tomb, hidden in the liturgy, hidden in the scriptures. His identity is hidden too. Many didn't see Him for who is really is - true God and true man.
The scriptures (Holy Bible) is the Word of God. Jesus is speaking to us when we read them or hear them, as in the Gospel today. Sometimes we are not listening. Sometimes a word hits us like a thunderbolt and our heart resonates with mighty beats of adrenalin as truth meets Truth. We listen attentively so that we might "have certainty" in the hope within us and meaning of the message.
Jesus might still be hidden but He is present. Present in Word and Tabernacle. He is speaking and waiting for us to hear Him. He is waiting for us to respond.
With my prayer for you every day.
God bless you,
Fr Graham.
