Fr. Graham Writes: 25th December 2022
There is a way of praying under the influence of Saint Ignatius of Loyola in his spiritual exercises which asks us to imagine that we are a person in a Gospel passage of scripture. This allows the text to come alive for us in a different way and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to us powerfully. The passage and prayer often bring us face to face in with Jesus perhaps when He speaks a parable, heals a sick person or forgives sin. For example, imagine being the sinner who is saved because no one threw the first stone. The encounter with Christ often takes on a life of its own and leads to comforting and challenging moments with Jesus.
At Christmas we could imagine that we are a shepherd, one of the Magi or a stranger standing by at the crib. What do we do, say, ask or give to the infant Christ? But perhaps most powerfully the one person we are called to be and already have some insight into is ourselves. Jesus has been sent to be one of us so that we might be one with Him. I am the one person He asks me to be and He was born, died and risen for this to be eternally true; free from the restraints and disfigurement of sin. God wants us to be with Him and so He comes to us in Jesus born of Mary. Let us reply "Yes" in our prayer to his desire for us to be with Him with no fear. With my prayer for a blessed Christmas for you and your intentions.
God bless you
Fr Graham
