Fr. Graham Writes: 23rd July 2023
There are probably many ways to combat temptation and to fight evil. Two of them are either to face the temptation head on and fight it to disarm its power. Alternatively, be aware of it but to focus on another good, so that we are distracted and grow in virtue so as to minimise the power of the evil. Both should be used in the spiritual and life of faith. Jesus uses both. In today's Gospel Jesus points to the latter and exhorts patient endurance. But we should be aware of some points. Firstly, Jesus states that we are in a spiritual battle: "Some enemy has done this". Evil exists. Secondly, drawing attention to the "evil one" can sometimes do more damage and can lead our focus away from God. Thirdly, there will be a day of harvest. The time is limited and, when God chooses, the "day" will come when He will judge all people. The demons know this and their fate, to be collectively "burnt" and so they try to cause havoc and chaos to disturb souls away from God. We are not left helpless; we have spiritual weapons of our own and the "Spirit comes to help us in our weakness" with sighs too deep for words. May the same Spirit, angels and saints help us in this battle to grow in the practice of virtue and holiness.
With my prayer for you every day.
God bless you.
Fr Graham
