Fr. Graham Writes: 19th November 2023
Some might think it timely that on the weekend of our Christmas Fair (yes), Jesus speaks in today's Gospel about making money! But, as you know, the parable that Jesus tells is no more about making profit than is our fair. The parable is about knowing the Master and trust.
Last week the parable of the bridegroom and bridesmaids ends with "I do not know you". This continues today. Clearly, the servant entrusted with one talent (the least) does not know his Master either. He was afraid of him. He had heard that his Master was "a hard man". He listened to rumour and other people's opinions, not his own experience. The deceiver whispered accusations and lies to sow the seeds of mistrust. If the servant had listened to his own conscience and bothered to find out for himself, he would have discovered that all the Master wanted was for him to join in his "master's happiness."
The treasure that we are given from God is not to be kept to ourselves (buried) but to be shared "open handed" with the poor, be it poor in material or spiritual goods. This treasure is both natural and supernatural, food and faith, human and divine. It is Jesus. To do this generously reaps an eternal reward and we discover true happiness, the happiness of the Master.
May God bless you all and with my prayer for your intentions.
Fr Graham
