Fr. Graham Writes: 17th September 2023
I expect St Peter thought he was being generous when he suggested that we should forgive someone seven times. But God cannot be outdone in generosity. "Seventy-seven times" replied Jesus. In other words, don't count. But Jesus does not just pluck a number from the air, He uses a multiple of seven, the perfect Biblical number. The seventh day does not end and God's forgiveness is perfect and does not end. Such generosity should invoke awe in us and an attempt to imitate such mercy. This is the mistake of the "wicked servant". There was no way he could have paid what he owed. It would have been equivalent of millions of pounds. It is fantastical that, in his pleading, he is even contemplating trying. But the King has compassion.
God has perfect compassion and does not live in the realm of fantasy. He is reality and He gives us Jesus, out of compassion for our situation (death) and debt (sin). Jesus pays the debt on the cross and allows himself to be imprisoned in the depths of death only to rewrite our future by virtue of the resurrection. The resurrection is our new relationship with God, our King. Do we really believe we can carve out a better future? Do we really believe we have the right to withhold forgiveness anymore? Keep forgiving, even if it hurts as we are called to live the prayer of the Our Father. Be generous as we will receive the same as we measure out.
In my prayer every day.
God bless you.
Fr Graham
