Fr. Graham Writes 17th July 2022

“It was during the hottest part of the day that the Lord appeared to Abraham at the entrance to his tent at the oak of Mamre. "He looked up and there he saw three men standing near him". This divine encounter has been depicted by Rublev in his "The Hospitality of Abraham". As Abraham welcomed and ministered to these three mysterious guests, offering food, shelter from the heat and drink, he realises that he is in the presence of the Lord God. Rublev's icon is therefore often referred to as the icon of the Holy Trinity.
Martha welcomes her guest on behalf of Mary, her sister. It is the same Lord that she ministers to as did Abraham. If Martha had understood the fullness of who Jesus was, maybe she might have sat at the feet of Jesus like Mary too, just to contemplate and be with Him.
St Paul says that the mystery we contemplate is "Christ among you". We don't fully comprehend who Jesus really is as we don't fully see His transfigured and risen glory - yet! Until that time we seek Him out, wherever He promises to be: in the poor, the refugee, the homeless, the sick....... and especially in the sacraments. There we sit and we behold His hidden glory clouded in mystery until He returns. With my prayer for you all.
God bless you.
Fr Graham”
