Fr. Graham Writes: 16th July 2023
The parables of Jesus are always relevant. Jesus still speaks to us through them. The parable of the sower refers to the seed of faith that God has generously given us and it takes root in our soul. This seed is planted in Baptism and is planted in a fertile soul. Yet over time it becomes hard or dry (like a rock), or shallow (without depth), or the seed gets pushed to the edge of our soul (as faith and God are pushed aside). How does this happen? As seeds need sunlight, water and food, so do our souls to remain in "rich soil" and "produce their crop". Even with good soil the fruits can get choked with the weeds of material possessions and the anxieties of life. How do we combat this? The key is real prayer to, with and in God. This prayer is both corporate (Mass) and solitary (private). It needs to be every day, even a little. It needs to grow and to be true devotion and worship of the One, True God revealed to us in Jesus. Just as Elijah asked the people of God to reaffirm their faith in God on Mount Carmel and refuse to follow false gods (1Kings 18). So, we (on this feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel), are being asked to reaffirm our faith in God and to pray with the heart and worship in spirit and in truth through Jesus. The whole of creation is waiting and even as it is drying up, we have the solution within our souls and the church, our faith.
With my prayer for you every day.
God bless you.
Fr Graham
