Fr. Graham Writes: 12th November 2023
The remembrance of the past always impacts on the present. It is a way of keeping memories and people alive, so they are not forgotten and for them to be passed onto to future generations. A photo, some music, a poppy, a veteran - they all contribute to make personal and communal tributes. Sadly, the power of simply remembering once a year doesn't stop a foolish humanity making the same mistakes - history often repeats herself.
The "remembrance" that we celebrate at Mass is for all time across the world. This prayer of the Church, commanded by Jesus, is not a re-enactment or symbolic rite relying on an image, good singing or even a relic of the past. "Do this in memory of me" is a profound moment in which everything stops and focusses upon the real Jesus on the cross - living, speaking, bleeding, dying, buried and risen.
Jesus "opens the door for us". He is the door to the Kingdom of Heaven. Our souls "thirst" for Him. Our bodies yearn for Him. Our world longs for His Kingdom, where peace is without end, love overcomes death and we always live in the eternal present. Coming to our senses only to become one with God.
May God bless you all and with my prayer.
Fr Graham
