Fr. Graham Writes: 11th February 2024
Leprosy is still a terrible and misunderstood illness. It still leads to rejection and separation from others. The leper, in Biblical times, was associated with being a sinner and being unclean. So much so that even contact with one leper was enough to make oneself unclean and unable to go or offer sacrifice to God in the Temple. However, in God's eyes, it is not the leper who is unsightly but sin.
There can be no sin in God. God is perfect love. "Think of the love that the Father has lavished on us" says St John. We are all God's children.
So when the leper said to Jesus, "If you want to, you can heal me". The response is not surprising to us but it was for His hearers. Jesus wants to heal everyone and to heal us from that most terrible sickness of sin that leads to death. He gives the remedy on the cross. Such is His love for us and His abhorrence of sin.
These Sundays before Lent are to help us to prepare for the season of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The purpose of these spiritual exercises is to overcome sin and grow more like Christ. Jesus says to us, " If you want to, I can make you holy". Let our reply be, " Of course I want to. Heal me this Lent."
With my prayer for you every day and for a fruitful Lent.
God bless you
Fr Graham
