Deacon Simon Writes: 3rd November 2024
Eight days ago, the Pope authorised the document that recorded the conclusions of the Synod on Synodality. Many commentators have focussed on the findings of the synod but very few have commented on the way the findings were arrived at. For me the process used throughout the Synod has far more reaching consequences for us today than the findings, especially as we will be using a very similar process to transition from a parish of three worshiping communities, (The Towers, Christ the King and St. Peter’s), into a Moderated Parish composed of the ten worshiping communities of the Worthing Deanery.
The process starts for us in January, but now is the time to prepare for that start. The process begins with prayer, listening for the promptings of the Holy Spirit and then proceeds with meetings, where the needs of the ten communities will be listened to before decisions affecting us are made. This synodal approach is new to us and it will probably take us some time to understand how best to adopt it but adopt it we will since our Pope has discerned that this approach is to be used throughout the Church. Specifically, the role of lay faithful in Church governance will be significantly expanded at all phases of ecclesiastical decision-making.
With my prayer for you all,
Deacon Simon
