Gifting or Sharing?
At Christmas we often give and receive gifts but that is not what Christmas is about. Gifts are good and bring happiness but today, Gaudete Sunday, we are reminded that Christmas is about joy not happiness. Joy is deep and lasts, whilst happiness is shallow and transient. So how do we experience joy? Well rather than gifting we should share what we have. John the Baptist extols his listeners, us, as follows: ‘Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.’
Sharing food, sharing what we have, with others brings joy. Yes, it is fun to give or receive a gift but that is not sharing. Sharing involves a joint experience of the same thing, and it is how God blesses us. The world we live in is not a gift from God, rather God shares the world with us. God is transcendent, God created the world, and God is imminent, present is everything and in everyone and we are all invited to share with God what God has created.
I am looking forward to being with everyone in Church on Christmas day, I am looking forward to sharing the joy of Jesus - Emmanuel - God who is with us, and in addition we can make this Christmas very special by sharing what we have with those we love and by sharing what we have with those who need it, sharing brings joy and joy makes Jesus - Emmanuel – present to the world.
With my prayer for you every day.
God bless you.
